Обучалась в Сиракьюсском [ Syracuse University] и Висконсинском [ Wisconsin, University of] университетах. Преподавала филологию в Детройтском [Detroit, University of], позднее в Принстонском университетах [ Princeton University]. В литературе дебютировала в 1963 сборником рассказов. Ведущие темы творчества: социальные проблемы, "феномен насилия и его последствий в иных аспектах, чем в греческой драме", человеческая психика, подчас в экстремальном состоянии. Автор более десятка сборников новелл, многих стихов, пьес и критических статей
